The Importance of Family in Lafayette, Colorado

The importance of family in Lafayette, Colorado goes back a long way. In fact, the town owes its existence to one particular family. In 1771, Mary Miller started a farm with her husband Lafayette on land that was homesteaded to them. Three years later, the couple moved to Boulder where her husband ran a butcher shop. When her husband passed away 1778, Mary moved back to the farm with her six children. In 1888, Mary donated 150 acres of the farm to create the town she would name after her husband. In 1890, the town was incorporated. Mary would even go on to start the community’s first bank. Miller was even surrounded by family when she died, passing away at her daughter-in-law’s home on East Cleveland Street in 1921.
